Cornmill Sidings – Michaelson Road to Hindpool Wall

HBP Ltd was engaged by EMCOR UK to deliver a package of remedial and improvement works on a publicly accessible route adjacent to Michaelson Road in Barrow-in-Furness.

The work includes:

  • Raking out and repointing defective mortar joints in boundary walls
Sourcing and replacing damaged coping stones to protect and weatherproof the wall
  • Excavating and repairing defective drainage within the footpath, with full reinstatement
  • Full carriageway resurfacing
  • Installation of new road markings, including designated parking bays and double yellow lines to improve traffic management and enforce parking restrictions

The project was delivered in a live public environment and required careful management of traffic, pedestrian movement, and local stakeholders. All works were delivered under our ISO 9001, 14001, and 45001-certified Integrated Management System, with project-specific controls including RAMS, a Traffic Management Plan (TMP), and a bespoke quality checklist for stonework and surfacing.

To manage risks associated with working near live traffic and public interfaces, our team engaged early in the design and planning stages. This allowed us to shape a phased delivery programme and implement suitable controls to minimise disruption. Traffic-sensitive activities, including drainage excavations and surfacing, were completed under full road closures, with clearly signed diversions and managed access in line with the TMP.

We actively engaged with local stakeholders to minimise disruption. To provide ongoing liaison and a route to raise queries or concerns, our Project Manager issued 24/7 contact details to local residents and businesses during mobilisation. Our operations were tailored to minimise impact, with daily checks carried out to maintain safe pedestrian routes, especially for school traffic and vulnerable users. Where a MEWP (Mobile Elevated Work Platform) was required for wall works along the road bridge slip road, we coordinated closely with the business owner to manage noise, access, and minimise operational disruption.

Reclaimed coping stones were transported to our inert waste facility, where they were crushed and recycled into Type 1 MOT. This supported our closed-loop materials approach, reducing waste and maximising reuse. The project was delivered on time, with zero RIDDORs or unresolved defects.

Applying our experience to benefit Cumberland Council

Cornmill Sidings demonstrates our ability to plan and deliver public realm improvement works in live environments, with robust access controls, stakeholder management, and quality outcomes. Our relevant experience to be applied on Lot 2 includes:

  • Experience delivering street-level infrastructure works, including drainage reinstatement, surfacing, structural repairs, and traffic controls under NEC4 terms.
  • Proactive stakeholder and traffic management, with pre-agreed access routes, phased closures, and 24/7 community liaison to mitigate disruption and maintain public confidence.
  • Design-led delivery using specialist materials, demonstrated through our local sourcing and quality-matched coping stones. Our flexible approach will support compliant delivery on sensitive or heritage assets.
  • Sustainability in practice, with reclaimed materials crushed and reused through our owned waste processing facilities, reducing embedded carbon and landfill in line with Council goals.
