M180 Doncaster Concrete Road Repairs

Between January and February 2025, we were appointed by DSD Construction, working under the National Highways SDF1 framework, to deliver concrete and inlaid crack repairs on the M180 near Doncaster. The project was built on our established relationship with DSD through the delivery of highways and civils works across the North of England.

Scope of Works
Our team was responsible for concrete repairs and inlaid crack repairs, enabling DSD to complete the associated resurfacing works. Following award, the scope increased significantly from 398m to 629m of crack repairs, while associated resurfacing increased from 2,753m² to 11,057m².

We self delivered the works using our own experienced workforce, supported by specialist subcontractors where required.

Key Project Challenges
The works were undertaken on a live motorway environment during winter, within tight traffic management restrictions and challenging weather conditions.

To accommodate the increased scope, we introduced a 24 hour working pattern, with detailed shift planning, fatigue management and daily programme reviews.

Weather conditions required us to continually adapt our programme, including changing concrete pouring times and increasing resources at short notice to maintain progress.

Sustainable & Efficient Delivery
We mixed concrete on site, allowing us to produce only the quantities required for each shift. This removed the need for concrete wagons and associated haulage, generating a saving of more than £20,000.

Excavated road planings were also reused off-site to construct an access road to a nearby bike track, avoiding disposal costs and reducing vehicle movements.

Dedicated minibuses and welfare vehicles were used to transport our workforce, while local accommodation helped reduce travel, support fatigue management and improve efficiency.

Key Outcomes

  • 629m of crack repairs delivered
  • 40 additional patches completed beyond the original scope
  • £20,000+ saving through on-site concrete production
  • Zero accidents or RIDDOR incidents
  • Works completed on time and on budget
  • 24 hour working successfully managed within existing traffic management constraints
  • Excavated planings reused rather than disposed of
  • Local suppliers and specialist contractors utilised

Our Approach
The project demonstrated our ability to respond quickly to changing requirements while maintaining safety, quality and programme performance in a high risk live motorway environment.

Our flexible self delivery model allowed us to increase resources, adapt working methods and accommodate additional scope without affecting the wider programme.

The successful delivery of the M180 works subsequently led to further opportunities with DSD and National Highways, including 28 additional patches at M62 Junction 38 and subsequent works on the A63.
